Directed and choreographed by Tommy Tune and Thommie Walsh (with uncredited assistance from Mike Nichols). Produced by Paramount Theatre Productions, Francine LeFrak, Kenneth-Mark Productions, King Street Productions, and Lewis Allen. Cast included Tommy Tune, Twiggy, Charles “Honi” Coles, Roscoe Lee Browne, Denny Dillon, and Bruce McGill.
The Cinderella story of the 1982-1983 Broadway season, MY ONE AND ONLY came through a difficult out-of-town tryout to charm audiences for two years in New York and several more years on the road. Twiggy and Tommy Tune were reunited for the first time since starring in Ken Russell’s film version of THE BOYFRIEND — Tune as the hayseed aviator and Twiggy as the sophisticated aquacade star with a past. And as wonderful as the pair were as star-crossed lovers, it was the second act duet between Tune and the elegant Charles “Honi” Coles — who played Mr. Magix, the mentor to Tune’s Captain Billy Buck Chandler — that stopped the show cold. During the first two thirds of the evening, Coles held forth perched on a barber’s chair, but during the title number, in a bit of mock exasperation toward Billy, he looked to the heavens and sighed, “Oh, Lord, this boy’s gonna make me get up out of this chair.” The audience was then transported by a tap challenge between the best of both generations.
