The circuitous route that NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT has taken to reach Broadway begins with the luminous Gertrude Lawrence and the 1926 opening of OH, KAY! at this same Imperial Theatre. One of George and Ira Gershwin’s greatest successes, the show featured “Someone to Watch Over Me,” one of the brothers’ most-enduring songs. A 1994 production of OH, KAY! at the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival inspired playwright Joe DiPietro to create a new Gershwin musical based on the Bolton and Wodehouse original that would continue the worldwide success of MY ONE AND ONLY and CRAZY FOR YOU.
Under several titles (including THEY ALL LAUGHED and HEAVEN ON EARTH), DiPietro’s show was developed through an out-of-town run and a series of readings and workshops over nearly 20 years, until the time was right and the proper group of individuals came together to turn the idea into a sparkling piece of entertainment celebrated with standing ovations and two Tony Awards.
